Chasing Scale is headed back to Mexico in May, 2021 to explore the wild coastlines and hopefully land us a few bonefish, tarpon, snook and permit! Those remote flats and endless mangroves never disappoint. (Neither do the street tacos!) Teeming with migratory birds, crocodiles and countless species of fish, the Yucatan’s diversity is astonishing. As always, Chasing Scale will bring you in on the action with social media posts, an exclusive youtube video and a creative blog post. Mexico! It’s one of our favorite destinations. It’s a no brainer for us. We’ll, of course, be putting together a ton of creative content. As always we’ll be posting to our social media accounts. But, due to the remote nature of this trip, we’ll be posting after we’re back in Tulum to drop off the van. If you’ve been following us, you know how much we dig videography. Yes, we’ll be putting a little ditty together for our peeps! We also love to write fun blog posts. Of course, we’ll be writing a creative essay about this trip. How could we not?! And, as always, we’d love your feedback on anything we create.
Fly into Cancun.
Get the hell out of Cancun ASAP.
Pick up the rental VW van in Tulum.
Get some delicious street tacos.
Pick up groceries and supplies.
Check on COVID testing for end of trip.
Hit the road southbound to remote flats.
Catch lots of fish and eat lots of ceviche.
This will be the first time we work with Bird Island Outfitters®. They’ve developed an inflatable kayak+SUP hybrid board that should be a welcomed addition to our trips. We bring lots of gear! With a weight capacity of 350lbs, the HERON should give us total freedom of adventure that we’re looking for on the flats.
The 6” drop stitch deck easily inflates tobecome super rigid providing ultra-stability. Drop stitch technology uses tens of thousands of tough polyester threads tightly woven together under two layers of PVC material. Similar to a catamaran, the outer pontoons not only provide structure, they also help to stabilize it on the water. Flipping the HERON over is nearly impossible–perfect for sight casting on the flats! As far as traveling, the HERON is super lightweight and very packable. Bottom line: transporting the HERON to and from Mexico should be a breeze. The HERON is advertised as fast! Its outer pontoons not only provide structure & stability, they also aid in hydrodynamics which will surely help on the choppy flats. With the HERON’s elevated drop stitch deck, the pontoons should “cut” through the water with minimal drag allowing us to cover lots of water quickly and efficiently. The tri-fin system underneath helps with tracking. In the shallows, being able to remove the larger middle fin will be key.
